Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his belief in the immense potential of Josh Acheampong, following the announcement that the 18-year-old defender has officially signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2029.
Maresca, who has closely followed Acheampong’s development since arriving at Chelsea, was thrilled with the news of the new contract.
The young defender had previously been embroiled in contract negotiations earlier this year, which led to a dramatic standoff and a few months of uncertainty.
However, those concerns were resolved by the end of November, when Acheampong rejoined training and went on to make his full senior debut just a week ago.
Acheampong started at right-back in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Astana in the UEFA Conference League, a key milestone in his rise through the ranks.
Reflecting on this achievement, Maresca commented, “I am very, very happy. With Josh, it has been quite clear. We had him in pre-season, and within two or three days, he really impressed me.”
The young defender’s versatility, having featured predominantly at right-back, makes him an asset for the squad.
Maresca has been eager to keep Acheampong close to the first team, expressing his desire for the player to continue developing at Chelsea rather than seeking a loan move for additional experience.
“My opinion is he has to stay close to us. So as much as we can keep him here, that is much better for me,” Maresca said.
He has since impressed at youth level and represented England at the Under-17 European Championships and the Under-17 World Cup in 2023.
His consistent progression has been highlighted by his seamless transition to the senior squad, culminating in his recent debut against Astana.
With his future now secured until 2029, Chelsea fans have much to look forward to, with Maresca confident that Acheampong will continue to grow into a key figure for the club.
“We are all sure Josh can be a great player for this club,” Maresca concluded.
Congratulations to Josh on his new contract, and Chelsea looks forward to watching his promising development unfold in the years ahead.
