Marc Cucurella has shared his thoughts on Chelsea’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Ipswich Town on Monday night, pinpointing key mistakes that cost the Blues dearly.
The match at Portman Road started poorly for Chelsea when Liam Delap converted an early penalty awarded after a contentious decision by referee John Brooks. Despite creating several chances to equalize, Chelsea fell further behind when former player Omari Hutchinson scored Ipswich’s second, leaving Enzo Maresca’s side with an uphill battle.
The loss marked Chelsea’s second consecutive Premier League defeat, a result that has left fans and players alike frustrated.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Marc Cucurella reflected on the defeat and highlighted where the team went wrong. According to the Spanish left-back, Chelsea’s inability to maintain composure and their tendency to rush in possession were pivotal factors in the loss.
“We conceded the early goal and had to play more with passing,” Cucurella explained. “Then, for the second [goal], we lost our way a bit with mistakes.”
While he didn’t name specific players, Cucurella alluded to Axel Disasi’s misplaced pass and Filip Jorgensen’s challenge on Delap as moments where Chelsea failed to assert control.
Cucurella emphasized the need for Chelsea to play with patience and discipline, suggesting that their frantic approach hampered their ability to capitalize on chances.
“We need to play always in the same style and take our time, but we rushed and made mistakes,” he said. “Sometimes we rush to win, but I think we have done well these first six months.”
The full back also expressed optimism about the team’s ability to regroup and improve during the January transfer window.
“In January, we have time to improve, train hard, and continue,” he added. “We need to play with the same intensity and desire, but take our time and make fewer mistakes.”
Chelsea fans will hope that Cucurella’s analysis spurs the team to address their issues and bounce back from a challenging run of form. With the Premier League title race heating up, Maresca’s men will need to rediscover their rhythm and resilience to remain contenders.
