Following a false start earlier this year, which led to a bit of a dramatic standoff, Chelsea have now finally agreed a new contract with Josh Acheampong, who has officially put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2029.
It seemed like a deal had been agreed back in October, but for reasons unknown, that agreement fell through, leading to a couple of months of impasse.
However, by the end of November, the 18-year-old was back in training and, to the delight of fans, made his full senior debut just last week.
He started at right-back in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League victory over Astana, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
Josh’s journey at Chelsea began when he joined the club’s development centre programme as an Under-8, and since then, he has steadily risen through the youth ranks, impressing coaches with his versatility and determination. The 2023/24 season has been a breakthrough year for the young defender.
In addition to signing his first professional contract, he played a key role in Chelsea’s Under-18s securing the Premier League Southern title and stepped up to Under-21s football.
Josh also made a memorable appearance in the senior squad during the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, before further showcasing his abilities in Chelsea’s summer tour of the United States.
Now, with his future secured for the next five years, Josh is set to continue his promising development at Chelsea.
He remains one of the club’s brightest young talents, and the Blues are excited to see how his journey unfolds. Congratulations to Josh on his new contract, and Chelsea look forward to watching him grow in a Blues shirt for years to come!
