Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku is open to joining Bayern Munich this summer, with initial contact made between the clubs following Al Nassr’s approach for Kingsley Coman, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Frenchman’s time at Stamford Bridge has been hindered by injuries since his arrival in the summer of 2023, and although he contributed to the success in the Conference League last season, he has struggled to establish a consistent role in the starting XI.
Nkunku joined Chelsea from RB Leipzig for a reported £52 million, arriving with high expectations after a prolific spell in Germany.
However, recurring fitness issues and limited game time have prevented him from reaching those heights in England, which has in turn opened the door for potential suitors like Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga champions are seeking attacking reinforcements and see the versatile forward as an ideal addition to their squad.
The discussions between the clubs began quietly when Al Nassr approached Bayern over Coman, which led the German side to explore alternative wide and forward options.
While Bayern would prefer a flexible arrangement, Chelsea are insistent that only a permanent sale will be sanctioned, as the club looks to generate funds for further summer business.

Nkunku’s openness to the move aligns with Chelsea’s willingness to reshape their attacking unit.
The Blues are actively targeting the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons to add dynamism and depth, and any incoming deals would be made easier if Nkunku departs.
Despite his ability to play across the forward line, Nkunku’s injury record has made it difficult for him to build momentum, and his role as a striker without the ball has been a tactical compromise rather than a natural fit.
Bayern, on the other hand, believe a return to the Bundesliga could reignite his form and provide them with a multi-functional attacking threat.
The timing of these developments means Nkunku will not feature in Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace this weekend.
He will be joined on the sidelines by Nicolas Jackson, who is also set to miss out amid transfer interest and a suspension.
Chelsea have already bolstered their forward line this summer with the arrivals of Estevão Willian, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Liam Delap and João Pedro.
There could also be further movement in defence after Maresca confirmed in his pre-match press conference that he is seeking a new centre-back to replace the injured Levi Colwill.
