Despite joining Chelsea just six months ago, Portuguese star Renato Veiga has reportedly agreed to personal terms with Borussia Dortmund this month, but the Blues remain reluctant to sanction a loan move.
The German giants are keen to secure Veiga on an initial loan deal, potentially with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.
However, Chelsea prefers a permanent sale if the 21-year-old is to depart Stamford Bridge. Wolves also approached the London club earlier this month, only to have their loan proposal rejected.
Veiga, who joined Chelsea from FC Basel for £12 million last summer, has been a regular in cup competitions this season. He played a key role in Chelsea’s recent 5-0 FA Cup victory over Morecambe, showcasing his versatility as a left-back despite his preference for a central midfield role.
Speaking about Veiga’s contributions, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed his trust in the young talent, though the Portuguese player’s position in the squad has been fluid. “He’s a fantastic player with great potential, and we trust him. But sometimes, tactical decisions need to be made for the team’s benefit,” Maresca said, referencing Veiga’s absence from a December match against Fulham.
Despite his limited opportunities in the Premier League, Veiga has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season. However, his desire for a more consistent role in his preferred position could make a move to Dortmund an attractive option.
Chelsea, meanwhile, remains focused on balancing their squad. Maresca has denied any plans to offload Veiga but confirmed that Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei are available for transfer during the January window.
