Semis Secured as Chelsea Women Thrash Durham

Chelsea Women have advanced to the semi-finals of this year’s Subway Women’s League Cup after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Championship side Durham at Kingsmeadow on Wednesday.

This dominant performance follows another 5-0 triumph over West Ham last week, which propelled the Blues to a commanding position in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and solidifying their impressive form.

The Blues controlled the match from the outset, with Aggie Beever-Jones continuing her scoring streak by netting her third goal in as many games in the 21st minute. Oriane Jean-Francois added a spectacular second with a stunning strike just after the hour mark, setting the tone for a second-half flurry of goals.

Erin Cuthbert, Guro Reiten, and Maika Hamano each found the back of the net in quick succession during a dazzling four-minute period, wrapping up the scoring by the 77th minute.

Hamano’s breathtaking looping shot from the right flank was a standout moment of the match, earning the Japanese international a well-deserved celebration.

Manager Sonia Bompastor made seven changes to the starting XI from the weekend’s WSL victory over West Ham, showcasing the depth of her squad. New inclusions like Ashley Lawrence, Maelys Mpome, and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd made their mark, with Kaptein and Macario coming off the bench to maintain the team’s relentless attacking momentum.

Chelsea’s victory secures them a semi-final clash against West Ham, scheduled for February 5/6 at Kingsmeadow. With the Blues unbeaten across all competitions this season and riding a 19-match streak, fans will be optimistic about their chances of lifting the League Cup.

Meanwhile, attention now turns to Sunday’s highly anticipated WSL derby against London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
