Benfica have opened formal negotiations to re-sign João Félix, as the Portuguese forward edges closer to a permanent exit from Chelsea.
The 24-year-old, once heralded as one of Europe’s brightest attacking prospects, is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer following a turbulent spell that has seen him struggle to settle across multiple clubs.
Félix rejoined Chelsea last summer in a controversial deal that involved Conor Gallagher heading to Atlético Madrid.
However, his second stint in West London failed to meet expectations. Despite flashes of quality, the forward was unable to secure a consistent role in Enzo Maresca’s plans and was subsequently loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of the season. His time in Serie A also proved underwhelming, prompting discussions over a permanent solution.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Benfica have now intensified efforts to bring Félix back to Lisbon, with direct talks ongoing between the club and his agent, Jorge Mendes.
The deal will hinge on Chelsea’s valuation and conditions, but all parties are reportedly aligned in seeking a resolution. Félix himself is said to be open to the return, viewing it as a chance to restart his career in familiar surroundings.

A product of Benfica’s academy, Félix rose to prominence during the 2018–19 season before making a high-profile move to Atlético Madrid. A return to the Estádio da Luz would not only mark a homecoming but also offer the opportunity to reestablish his form under a system that historically nurtured his development.
Félix’s potential departure forms part of a broader restructuring at Chelsea. The club is expected to offload several attacking options this summer, with Christopher Nkunku also among those linked with a move away. These exits could open the door for the arrival of Xavi Simons, the Dutch playmaker who remains a key target for the Blues in this window.
Chelsea are currently enjoying an extended break following their FIFA Club World Cup triumph, a tournament that also brought significant financial rewards. Preparations for the new season are underway, and the squad is expected to regroup in the coming weeks.
