Chelsea vs Luton Town

Danny Welbeck marked his Chelsea debut with a goal as the Blues beat Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup, Xabi Alonso overseeing a first competitive win in his own dugout since taking charge.

Alonso named a strong side for his first competitive home game in charge, handing full debuts to three summer signings: goalkeeper Mike Penders, full-back Valentin Barco and Welbeck himself. Chelsea dominated large spells of a goalless first half without finding a breakthrough. Cole Palmer was denied twice by Josh Keeley inside the opening quarter of an hour, Reece James forced another save from a free-kick, and Morgan Rogers struck the crossbar with a first-time volley on his own home debut. Luton offered little going forward, Hakeem Odoffin’s header from a set-piece the closest the visitors came in the opening 45 minutes.

Luton, two divisions below Chelsea in League One, set up defensively and rarely threatened beyond Odoffin’s early header, with Josh Keeley the visitors’ standout performer. The goalkeeper produced a string of saves either side of half-time, twice denying Palmer in quick succession and getting down well to keep out James’s free-kick, before he was eventually beaten by Welbeck’s header. Keeley was called upon again in stoppage time to deny Palmer and João Pedro in the same passage of play, before Gittens rattled the post.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes into the second half. Estêvão worked the ball down the right and picked out the overlapping Malo Gusto, whose cross was met by Welbeck for a close-range header, his first goal for the club. Estêvão was involved again with 11 minutes left, drilling a low shot that cannoned in off the unfortunate Odoffin and over the line for what stood as a Chelsea goal via own goal.

Palmer continued to threaten a third throughout the second half, denied late on by Keeley before Jamie Gittens struck the post in stoppage time, but two goals proved enough to see off a resolute Luton side from two divisions below. Barco impressed on his own debut in midfield, winning the ball back in the build-up to the second goal, while Estêvão was a constant threat down the right all evening.

Alonso made three changes just after the hour mark, Jorrel Hato, Romeo Lavia and Pedro Neto replacing Gusto, James and Rogers, with João Pedro and Gittens also introduced before the final whistle.

The result kept alive a notable subplot. Enzo Fernández, whose representatives have held talks with Manchester City, was left out of the squad entirely having appeared as a substitute in Monday’s 3-2 win at Fulham. Alonso dismissed reports from Argentina that Fernández had asked to be left out, insisting: “It was a decision I took. He’s a good professional. He’s training well and I have nothing to say about him. It was just a decision that we had to take, thinking about the game that we’re playing tonight and we’ll see for Sunday [against Brighton].”

Victory sends Chelsea into a third-round tie at home to Leeds United during the week commencing 7 September, with the Carabao Cup taking on added importance under Alonso given Chelsea are not involved in Europe this season. It also arrived on a busy night at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea agreeing a £7.5m fee with Aston Villa for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez shortly after full-time, his involvement in Sunday’s Premier League visit of Brighton still to be determined.

Attention now turns quickly back to Stamford Bridge, with Brighton visiting on Sunday for Chelsea’s first home league game of the season.
