Chelsea Women Confirm Girma Signing for Record Fee

Chelsea Women have confirmed the signing of highly talented defender Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for a world record fee in women’s football.

The 24-year-old U.S. international joins the Women’s Super League (WSL) leaders on a deal that runs until the summer of 2029. The transfer fee, reported to be around £900,000, surpasses the previous record of £685,000 paid by Bay FC for Racheal Kundananji last year.

Girma, a 2024 Olympic gold medalist and former U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, expressed her excitement about the move, saying, “It doesn’t feel real, but I’m so happy and excited to be here. Chelsea’s culture, winning mentality, and environment for growth were all key factors in my decision.”

The defender was presented to Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge during their 1-0 win over Arsenal in the WSL. Despite facing stiff competition from French giants Lyon, Girma’s preference was always to join the Blues.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor hailed the transfer as a significant step forward for the club, emphasizing that Girma’s arrival signals their ambition to secure more titles, including a first Champions League trophy. “She’s an incredible talent, and we’re fortunate she chose us,” said Bompastor.

Chelsea’s captain Millie Bright also welcomed Girma, expressing excitement about teaming up with the new signing: “It sends a strong message to Europe about where this club is headed.”

Girma, however, will not be available for Chelsea’s upcoming fixture against Aston Villa on 2 February due to a minor injury.

Having led San Diego Wave to win the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Shield, Girma brings both experience and leadership to the Blues. Her signing not only strengthens Chelsea’s defense but also reinforces their position as a leading force in women’s football.
