RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons is in London as talks intensify over a potential move before the close of the transfer window, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur both vying for his signature.
The Dutch international, who was part of Leipzig’s 6-0 opening-day defeat, has been granted permission by his club to hold discussions over his future.
Leipzig confirmed that Simons has been released from training until further notice while negotiations continue.
Chelsea have tracked the 21-year-old throughout the summer and were long considered frontrunners, with Simons even turning down interest from Bayern Munich.
However, the Blues’ need to offload players before committing to new arrivals has opened the door for Tottenham.
Spurs, bolstered by their Europa League triumph and strong financial position, have moved quickly in recent days.
The North London side had previously tried to sign Eze during his time at Crystal Palace before Arsenal intervened, and they are now hopeful of hijacking Chelsea’s pursuit.
Sources in Italy suggest Chelsea’s agreement with AC Milan for Christopher Nkunku, a long-term Leipzig target, could facilitate a breakthrough for the Blues in their pursuit of both Simons and Alejandro Garnacho.
Meanwhile, striker Nicolas Jackson also faces an uncertain future, with Bayern Munich, Newcastle, and several other clubs monitoring his situation.
Despite Tottenham’s late push, Chelsea remain firmly in the race, setting up a fierce London battle for one of Europe’s most promising talents.
RB Leipzig only completed Simons’ permanent signing from Paris Saint-Germain earlier this summer, with the Netherlands international penning a contract until 2027.
Reports indicate Leipzig paid an initial €50 million, with a further €30m in add-ons, which could have made Simons the second-most expensive signing in Bundesliga history, behind Harry Kane’s €95m move to Bayern Munich.
